Send a Family to Camp

We’re about three weeks away from Camp Skookum, which for some families, is a yearly highlight. This is a four-day, three-night family sleep-away camp for families impacted by foster care. And your generosity makes it possible.

Camp is going to be full this year. Completely. Not a single open bed. For roughly half of these families, it’s their first visit to camp. The rest are returning to a place where they know to expect connection, rest, and play.

One of those returning families is a single mother and her four children. Let’s call her Abigail. Last year, when they attended for the first time, Abigail signed up with great enthusiasm and then cancelled at the last minute. She explained that two of her kids were scheduled to move home the week before camp. We probably didn’t have room, she thought, and it would all be too much anyway. Better to just skip.

Absolutely not! We said. What do you need? New bathing suits for everyone, a little help with transportation.

Easy-peasy. We arranged those things, and Abigail and her family celebrated their reunification with us at Camp.

That was a year ago, and that family is still clinging to each other and growing stronger.

They are returning to Camp, and when we checked in on them recently Abigail shared that she was eager to connect with other parents this year. Last year it was all so fresh and her kids couldn’t tolerate being separated from her even for a few yards over a few minutes. Understandable, but that made it difficult for Abigail to make any mom-friends. But that’s her goal this year.

She has lots of questions. Like: How do you do it? and What makes it easier?

Abigail and 14 other reunified families will spend a long weekend with us at the Lake—connecting, resting, and playing together.

Will you give to make Camp Skookum unforgettable?

Will you give for Abigail and the four kids she’s working so hard to raise differently?

We have a lot of great ideas, but none of them are possible without generous supporters like you who make Camp happen. Will you give today?
